I’m looking forward to finding out exactly what happened at this residence today. What we know:
- a 13-year-old girl who lived in this house, which is across the street from an elementary school (!), was shot in the back and found a couple blocks away this morning.
- as paramedics attended to her, police were called to this house, which was suddenly engulfed in flames
- a man, possibly in his 30s, was found unconscious and unresponsive inside. He died a short time later. He is believed to be the shooter.
- the girl is in stable condition. Police are hoping to get much of their information from her when she is well enough to speak with them.
What could have possibly happened here? What was their relationship? What would compel a grown man to shoot a 13-year-old girl in the back, presumably as she was running away? I’m baffled. Any guesses?
I arrived at the house around 5:30 p.m. (Colleague Tiffany Crawford had been on scene earlier.) When I got there, a burnt smell hung thick in the air, and I could see the sky through the broken windows and burnt-away roof. Water, from earlier firefighting efforts, continued trickling down the side of the house on to the ground. Lots of kids milled about, staring at the house, including a young girl on a bicycle. Just disturbing all around.
Here is The Vancouver Sun‘s story today.
Friend and colleague Erin Loxam and I have pledged to take and upload one photo every day for all of 2011. See how she’s doing here.
