Nanaimo groom, father and son among five Canadians killed in Mexican resort explosion

Malcolm Johnson, 33, of Nanaimo

This is incredibly sad: Nanaimo realtor Malcolm Johnson, 33, is one of five Canadians who died today in a freak gas explosion at a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. He had just gotten married there days earlier.

From my story in Monday’s Vancouver Sun:

Malcolm Johnson, 33, was at the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel, a sprawling complex in the beach city resort of Playa del Carmen, with his new bride, Heather Pynten, and their one-year-old daughter. Johnson and Pynten had been married at the resort just days before the explosion. It is believed his wife and daughter are not injured.

“He was a great friend and colleague,” said an emotional Dave Komo, who described the up-and-coming realtor as easy to talk to. “He was a great, outgoing guy who was super business smart. It’s horrible.”

Four other Canadian tourists, including a nine-year-old boy, died when the blast tore through a lobby and restaurant in the resort, Mexican authorities said.
